Medicine in Louisiana took many forms. Folk traditions dominated in the rural regions, but the medical profession became an established institution by the mid-1800s. In addition, Louisiana was a breeding ground for epidemics, especially Yellow Fever. Today, Louisianians still have to contend with new and mysterious ailments, such as the West Nile Virus, in addition to illnesses caused by environmental hazards.
