Welcome

The Louisiana Historical Association is a wonderful living resource, an organization composed of members from the professional realm and the general community working together to preserve the state’s historical legacy.

The quarterly journal, Louisiana History, is nationally recognized as one of America’s finest state historical publications.  The journal’s integrity is surpassed only by the scholarship of its members and contributing authors.  Articles in Louisiana History cover a wide range of topics—African Americans, Native Americans and Cajuns, military, medical, legal and political history, sports and leisure, the wars fought on Louisiana soil, ethnicity, and the environment.

In addition to the journal, the Louisiana Historical Association produces a quarterly newsletter.  The newsletter provides a forum for state colleges and universities to post information and news regarding their history departments, keep abreast of members outside Louisiana and allied organizations, and provide notice of upcoming events.

Next year’s annual meeting will be held March 22-24, 2007, in Alexandria, Louisiana.  The LHA meeting is held in conjunction with Phi Alpha Theta’s regional conference, which promotes academic excellence among undergraduate and graduate students throughout Louisiana.

The Louisiana Historical Association offers something for everyone, and engages the public to participate in the rich history and vitality of the state.  Join today (PDF).

Teacher Resources

Originally founded April 11, 1889, the Association was created for the purpose of collecting and preserving Louisiana’s historical resources.  Early members include Confederate generals P.G.T. Beauregard, R.L. Gibson and William Miller Owen, as well as notable scholars such as William Preston Johnston, the first president of Tulane University.  Housed in Memorial Hall of New Orleans after 1891, the Association maintained and operated the Confederate Museum on Camp Street.

With the passage of time, it became clear the Association needed a new direction.  At a meeting in Pineville on March 29, 1958, professionals and other historically inclined people met and organized a historical society that supported modern concerns regarding historical preservation and promotion of Louisiana’s cultural identity, its unique brand of politics and its distinctive contributions to the nation’s growth.

Today, the Louisiana Historical Association boasts a large membership, annual meetings, involvement in various historical projects throughout the state, and publications.

Membership includes both professional and lay historians interested in preserving and promoting Louisiana’s history.  Outreach programs permit experts to share their expertise with the greater community and include Civil War reenactments, promotion of area museum exhibitions, and memorials of notable Louisianans.
