Joseph Gagné Speaks on October 29 on UL Lafayette Campus

The Center for Louisiana Studies and the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are pleased to host doctoral candidate from Laval University, Joseph Gagné for “Fuite et fausse fortune en Louisiane: Vie et péripétie louisianaise d’un officier français entre 1760 et 1768” (“Flight and False Fortune in Louisiana: The Life and Louisiana Travels of a French Officer Between 1760-1768”) beginning at 3:30pm on Monday, October 29 at Oliver Hall Auditorium on the UL Lafayette campus.

2018 marks the 250th anniversary of the end of a certain, little-known adventure that unfolded against the backdrop of the decline of the French regime in North America. At the conclusion of the War of Conquest (also known as The Seven Year’s War), a French officer, Louis Liénard de Beaujeu, refused to surrender his arms to the British, deciding instead to offer his support to the neighboring French colony of Louisiana. Thus began his fascinating odyssey, which took Liénard from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, where he spent eight years in exile. The life of this soldier opens a rare window into the French societies of Canada and Louisiana during a time of incredibly dramatic political and cultural change.

Joseph Gagné’s presentations and research at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is sponsored by Le centre de la Francophonie des Ameriques.

The Acadiana community is invited to attend this free lecture en français beginning at 3:30pm on Monday, October 29 at Oliver Hall Auditorium on the UL Lafayette campus.
