The Center for Louisiana Studies and the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are pleased to host doctoral candidate from Laval University, Joseph Gagné for “Rumeurs, traîtres et désordre: Le renseignement militaire en Louisiane pendant la guerre de Sept Ans” (“Rumors, Traitors, and Disorder: Military Intelligence in Louisiana During the Seven Years War”) beginning at 6:30pm on Tuesday, October 30 at the South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston Street.

In recent years, historians have started to turn their attention to espionage and surveillance in the 18th century, particularly to the period of the American Revolution. But what do we know about such activities during the Seven Year’s War in North America? Although there was no central intelligence service like the famous Culper spy ring network, the potential presence of individual spies was a real threat for all armies involved. Nowhere was this danger more pressing than in Louisiana. Whether actual foreign intelligence operatives or simply scapegoats of broader political conflicts, these “spies” posed one of many problems afflicting a colony at war. This presentation focuses on some of the most revealing instance of espionage and suspected espionage in French Louisiana.
