Journal Launch: Études Francophones. March 10th, 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m., Location TBD.
This event will mark the release of the new issue of Ètudes Francophones, a referred journal devoted to Francophone Studies. Managed and founded by scholars in the department of modern languages at UL Lafayette, this well-respected journal has lived online in recent years. This event marks the release of the newest volume of journal in a print edition published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press (UL Press.)

Join us for an insightful talk by independent scholar Caroline Vézina on her latest book, "Jazz à la Creole: French Creole Music and the Birth of Jazz." In this presentation, Vézina will delve into the roots of jazz music in the varied Creole cultures of Louisiana, exploring the unique musical traditions that influenced the genre's development. The talk will be held at 11 a.m. in Room 254 of Angelle Hall on the campus of UL Lafayette, and promises to offer a fascinating perspective on the history of jazz music and of Creole culture that is not to be missed.

Lecture by Dr. Jeffrey Darrensbourg on the language of the Ishak people of Southwest Louisiana; May 8, at the Center for Louisiana Studies, 1204 Johnston Street, Lafayette, Louisiana
Join us for an exciting talk by scholar Dr. Jeffrey Darrensbourg on the language of the Ishak people of coastal Louisiana, also known as the Attakapas or the Attakapas-Ishak on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Darrensbourg will discuss the history, structure, and phonology of Ishak, as well as its unique features and cultural significance, and the way it has historically been documented and studied. The talk will also cover contemporary efforts to speak and create in the language. This talk is an excellent opportunity to learn about this area rich indigenous culture. All are welcome!
